Donate NowAt Northwest Rafting Company we bring groups of travelers to the Kingdom of Bhutan. Here, we explore a culturally diverse country high in the Himalayas and visit famous Dzongs, monasteries, and watch as western culture blends with the long standing traditions of Bhutan.In years past we have tried to raise money to bring our friends Thinley and Chencho to the USA for a kayaking adventure. We thought it would be fun to bring them here and show them new rivers, meet new people, and continue honing their kayaking skills. After hosting an International Rafting Federation course in spring 2019 we have decided to host another course. We figured this would be an excellent opportunity to get Thinley and Chencho to the USA for not only white water paddling, but also some top notch training. The larger goal is for them to become International Rafting Federation Instructors so they can train their fellow Bhutanese guides. Being a country with a Gross National Happiness, the Bhutanese strive to make those around them happy so they can be happy. Our guides generously show us this attitude and shared their culture. We want to return the hospitality. This page is dedicated to Thinley and Chencho, two of Bhutans finest river guides and kayakers.With over 10 + years of paddling and guiding rivers throughout Bhutan they seldom have the opportunity to leave their country. These Aquatic Superheroes are here to make Swimming fun and Safe!About UsCoach André Morton is owner of Rhythm and Stroke LLC, an Aquatics organization focusing on water safety, swim survival, stroke refinement and aquatic exercise. He has been an Aquatics Instructor for over ten years. who has exploded the fitness scene with his water classes. Coach André swam competitively for several years. Now he shares his experience and expertise with others. Teaching everyone from fearful newcomers to the water in his Free ‘Do it Afraid Program’, to more advanced swimmers who have a desire to enhance their swim skills. Teaching infants, seasoned seniors, Navy recruits and certifying aspiring and current lifeguards. Coach André is WSI and LGI certified and holds a Master's degree from Bowling Green State University. He and his Queen, Kimberly, work together to push their Swim Like Me initiative. It is their mission to help others inhale confidence & exhale fear in the water, especially in the African-American and Hispanic communities where the drowning rates are the highest.With your help, our 3D animated characters, Splash and Friends, will educate children and adults of all ages and cultures on the importance of water safety and learning to swim. What We Need We are raising $25,000.00 to create 5 animated episodes of Splash and Friends. In order to change the negative stereotypes among all races that Blacks and Hispanics can't swim, representation of these same cultures swimming is encouraging and empowering. Everyone loves to go to the water, Pool, ocean or cruises, but 87% of these same people cannot swim. The animation is a fun way to get people to Splash Safely. Education will help decrease the high drowning rates. Risks & ChallengesOnce the project is complete, we will have to promote it to production companies to get it into syndication, The challenge of others seeing value in the importance of children and adults learning to swim and practicing proper water safety techniques is something we have faced for years and continue to face in and outside of our communities. We also have the challenge of renting other facilities to hold our classes. Our Solutions: We are working diligently on purchasing our own facility We have begun and will continue to build relationships with individuals and companies that understand the importance of decreasing drowning rates who will take an interest in our mission. This ensures that the seeds have already sprouted before they’re even in the ground and that they have a strong rooting system when they grow. Not only that, but after we plant them we follow up with our spraying drone to remove competition and provide nitrogen and other nutrients for the best chance of success. We continuously monitor our seedlings with the mapping drone to make sure they’re healthy.How do you plant the trees?We plant our seed pods, using a heavy-lift drone that’s been customized with a pneumatic firing device to insert the pods into the soil at the appropriate depth.Tree planting companies use seedlings. Why would they use seed pods instead of seedlings if it takes longer to grow?Planting pods has several advantages over seedlings.1) Drones allow us to plant pods 10X faster per drone than seedlings can be planted.2) Our seed pods contain 3 pre-germinated tree seeds, mycorrhiza, nutrients and other supportive species for the area.3) Pods are much less energy/ water intensive to produce and have a lower environmental impact.4) Pods can be created in mass within a month, whereas seedlings take 1 to 2 years of intensive care in a nursery before they can be planted. This allows us to plant rapidly and at 20% the cost of a seedling.Are you qualified?Yes. Three of our core members have backgrounds in science and engineering. Additionally, we’re working closely with scientists with PhD's in botany, seed genetics, and forestry specialists on every job. We are fully certified and licensed for UAV operation in Canada.What tree species do you plant?This year we planted eight deciduous and coniferous species local to Southern Ontario. We can easily fill our pods with seeds of virtually any tree species (except for acorns and a few of the larger exceptions). If interested, we can also plant any flora that’s appropriate for an ecosystem in it’s successional period. In your video you talk about planting for full eco-system recovery, how are you doing this?We know that planting a single tree species will not restore an ecosystem to its natural state nor will it guarantee a healthy forest. That’s why we develop pods that capture the relevant tree seeds, mycorrhiza, nutrients, and soil properties for the target area. Seeds from local sources are usually the best adapted to the target ecosystem but even that isn’t always the case. Climate change has rapidly changed ecosystems and sometimes seeds from lower latitudes are actually more likely to survive in warming climates. We are building a team of experts in restoration ecology to ensure that science underpins all of our efforts and captures nature’s nuances.Do you work with companies that are interested in planting only one or two types of trees?While our focus is on full-eco system recovery, we can work with others, including oil and timber companies, who prioritize a select few tree species. However, we will always push to ensure our seedlings have the best chance of success and will disclose what the ecosystem's needs are to ensure this.Where do you operate?So far we’ve planted in southern Ontario. However, we are in talks for potential work in Alberta and Brazil (Atlantic Forest). Our sights are set internationally and we are actively working to scale this globally.Risks and challengesReforestation is an extremely nuanced field and in order for us to bring this technology across international borders we need funding..and we need it quick. We have an immediate need to purchase equipment that will allow us to produce millions of seed pods. The video you just watched is only a small portion of the fun and excitement that is known as A Great Chase - and we want to bring it to your city so you can experience it too! A Great Chase is an adventurous and fun activity that challenges teams to solve clues and compete to finish the race first. It was started in Las Vegas in 2012 by my husband and I because we wanted to be on An Amazing Race (the TV show) and thought, "Since we can't participate, lets create a local version and other people might want to particpate as well". Boy were we right! We have had a tremendous turnout since we launched and we have expanded to San Diego. We even do special charity events in one-off cities. What we hear at every event from the Chasers is, "BRING A GREAT CHASE TO OUR CITY!" We think it's time the rest of the USA and even a few other countries get to experience all of the fun A Great Chase offers - and that is where you come in! What It Will Take: Expanding is expensive and A Great Chase is more of a fun activity than a big business right now. So we need $23,000 to bring A Great Chase to 10 cities. This money is $3,000 in legal fees and then $2,000 per city for: Finding staff, setting up the course, finding people/businesses to partner with and launching the event. Our ultimate goal is 25 US cities and 10 international destinations for vacationers. (It even sounds super fun as I type that out : ) A full list of cities is available on our website at www.agreatchase.com (Click on FRANCHISE tab) but here are a few we are targeting: Miami - New York - Washington D.C. - Los Angeles - Phoenix - Dallas Houston - Atlanta - Philadelphia - Chicago - New Orleans and more.... If we don't reach the full $23,000, it means A Great Chase will be in less cities. If we exceed the $23,000 it means A Great Chase will be in more cities! Our goal is to make A Great Chase a permanent attraction in each of these cities and not a one time event. Making A Difference A Great Chase is a fun activity and I don't want to act like we are "saving the world" BUT it has had a much bigger impact than my husband and I originally envisioned. First, it has allowed all of the Chasers at each event to interact and meet new friends. That may not sound like much but in a world of Social Media, TV and Video games...regular interaction and socialization with real human beings is often missing. This event has allowed father/son teams to bond, husband/wife teams to get closer and co-workers to build relationships. In addition we have been able to donate 25 entries to the Ronald McDonald House in Las Vegas to support their charity!! We have also partnered with Hui O'wanie in Hawaii to raise $2,000 for the charity in a January Hawaii based Great Chase!! We didn't realize when we started that charities would be so interested in partnering with A Great Chase to raise money but we are more than happy to provide a fun way to raise money for a great cause. Not just on my own, but to share it with others who have the same passion as I do to see new places, cultures and people. Starting in 1998, I have been involved in the tourism industry in a multitude of capacities. I spent 6 seasons in Breckenridge, CO working for Vail Resorts. In March of 2005, I joined the Trek America team leading tours and driving for 4 years from Mexico to the Arctic Ocean, Los Angeles to New York City. After a brief hiatus in graduate school and teaching chemistry, I returned to the road working for Dragoman in the Middle East along with Eastern/Southern Africa and South America. I love what I do and the initial focus of Infinite Adventures is to highlight the amazing beauty and adventures available in the wilds of Alaska. Over time, the hope is to grow the adventures offered on down through Western Canada and the lower-48. I want to be your expert on all things North America! The reason for my campaign is to be assisted in developing in an overland vehicle. I would love to build a vehicle from scratch but this would cost close to $150,000. Way too much for a startup to invest and expect to grow and become profitable within it's first few years. So, I've decided on the next best option; which is to take an old bus and refurbish it to my specifications where we will have a backlocker (luggage storage), 20 seats, 2 tables, a refrigerator, overhead lockers, exterior storage compartments, and a roof rack with viewing platform along with other vital amenities. This type of vehicle is commonly being used in tours throughout the world, except here in North America. If I can develop the first of its kind here, I believe that Infinite Adventures will see remarkable growth within it's formitive years. I believe that this undertaking is the next step in the tourism industry here in the states. With gas/diesel prices continuing to rise, the need for travelers to utilize these types of small group adventure tours will continue to grow. Your contributions to my small business will be a great spring board in being ready to get the wheels rolling May 2013. Infinite Adventures is looking to raise $15,000 towards the initial purchase of our overland vehicle. Donate NowShort Summary My name is Harry Gorman and I run a small independent Barber Shop in the Uptown Area of Saint John, NB. For just over a year I've been operating my barbershop with three chairs while attempting to finish renovations in the rear area of the shop in order to better serve the citizens of Saint John. After spending many years working in trades and living out west, I decided a few years ago to return to Saint John and take part in the revitalization of the Uptown core. I took over a lease in an empty space on Princess st. and have been renovating since, mostly myself. We've been able to set up a warm and cozy space with three barber chairs, but almost half of our total space is still in the throes of renovation. I'm proud to be in Saint John and am looking forward to being able to provide a better guest experience by having more barber chairs, as well as some beverages and a lounge area! What We Need & What You Get We are looking to fundraise from our community in order to finish our renovations. I'm doing the work myself, but the materials and furniture needed to finish the job are very expensive. We're hoping to raise enough to cover costs, but regardless of where we land every penny will go towards renovations. We're looking to expand the space of our barbershop into the back area in order to host more guests, and to provide a better experience while you're here, with things to watch, read and drink and a comfortable area to chill before or after your cut The Impact Our block on Princess st. is slowly coming up over the last few years, going from being almost completely empty to housing new businesses like Catapult coffee or our new neighbours Ethel & Mary's. We're looking to further build this block to the point where the Uptown shopping district can expand further and provide a better general business area in the Uptown not only for all of our great visitors during tourist season, but for people living in our community. We would like to become a cool and relaxed place to hang out and get a haircut, have a beer, and catch up on the talk of the town, in that classic Barber Shop way! We're excited about some of the perks we've come up with for this campaign. One very convenient option is to buy a punch card for haircuts, that way you don't have to worry about it for months to come, just pop in with your card and get yourself right! The funds from this campaign will go directly into the development of our space in the following ways: 1: Finish renovations in rear of the shop and install bar. 2: New flooring in the rear are of the shop as well as pine trim. 3: Carpenter fees to build new barber station. 4: Additional lighting in the ceiling of the new bar space. 5: New heaters in the rear area. 6: Painting. 7: Seating for lounge area in the bar and television. 8: New sign for the storefront. 9: Licensing fee for bar. As you can see there's lots to be done! We've worked very hard so far doing much of the renovations ourselves to get to where we are now, so if you're interested in helping you could get us to the finish line of our renovations and help to finish revitalizing a little piece of uptown Saint John. Risks & Challenges At this point we are in operation and happily serving our customer base, but in order to get to a place where we can become profitable enough to sustain and build a solid business that will last for years to come we need to expand our space and especially put more barber stations in, which is very expensive. If we aren't able to reach our goal we will still get where we need to go, but it will take considerably longer and put more of a strain on the business as a whole.
