Armies of neighboring countries have occupied the eastern half of the country since 1997. These groups have put the people of the Congo through thousands of large-scale massacres that have resulted in loss of more than six million lives creating hundreds thousands widows and orphans. Small young boys were forced to join the armies, while many young girls, babies and women have been raped, tortured and left dead. Hundred thousands of children if not killed have been left without parents or any relatives . In effort to help those orphans and women victims ,impacted by war in the Congo. Mwenga Women Aid Foundation a non-profit organization was created in order to assist them with urgent needs such as; food, used clothing, shelter but also counseling. Haiti, causing catastrophic damages inside and around the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Léogâne and Jacmel. It is imperative that we, as Christians remember that God has blessed us with gifts and talents that can be utilized to help others. As Haitians we should not forget that Haiti needs continual help. During the month of July, we would like to mobilize all of our resources and manpower to aid in the relief effort and rebuilding of our beloved nation. We would like for this mission to be the first of many ways in which we get involved to change and improve Haiti’s infrastructure. The mission will take place in Léogâne. Léogâne was at the epicenter of the 7.0 magnitude January 12th earthquake, and was catastrophically affected. A United Nations assessment team that investigated three main towns near Port-au-Prince found that Léogâne was “the worst affected area” with 80-90% of buildings damaged and no remaining government infrastructure. Nearly every concrete structure was destroyed. The damage was also reported to be worse than the capital. There used to be an estimated 100,000 people residing there but the military estimated that 20,000 to 30,000 people had died from the earthquake in Léogâne. People have congregated in ad hoc squatter camps and relief has taken longer to reach Léogâne. We believe in the divine inspiration of the Holy Bible that serves as a guide to walk with Jesus Christ whom we proclaim as our Lord and Savior. Everywhere in the world, there are people who are lost and hurting because they do not know Christ. Sometimes, the greatest ministry can be as simple as listening, talking, and offering a helpful hand. This mission is to nurture and edify the physical, emotional and mental state of traumatized young victims of the earthquake by means of Biblical education, praise and worship services, and learning experiences gained through recreational activities, counseling sessions, community service, and medical tour. Overview The Bug Wagon is a long term public education campaign dressed up as an edible insect extravaganza. It is designed to bring awareness of the benefits of bugs to both people and planet, in order to help make the world a better place. We will travel to fairs, festivals, expos, youth groups, civic groups, schools, restaurants, hot nightspots, hold our own special events, and utilize any other venue that we can find along the way. We also want to model, spread, and encourage kindness and respect for all. Within 10 years, we see a Bug Wagon pop up tent as a regular favorite at most fairs, festivals, farmer’s markets, expos, and any other type of marketplace in America that we can find. We eventually see a Bug Wagon brick and mortar edible insect outlet in several major metropolitan areas in America (NYC, L.A., Chicago, Dallas etc.), specializing in all things edible insects; also holding regular Bug & Booze pairings, outreaches at local youth & civic groups, schools, and events at select local restaurants and popular nightspots. We see multiple Bug Wagons eventually roaming various sections of the country on designated routes; pulling into fairs, festivals, expos, wine rooms, beer houses, select restaurants, local nightspots, youth & civic groups, and schools. Oh, and a parade or two once in a while. We see an edible insect educational extravaganza with dynamic crowd presentations, fun bug & booze nightspot events, digital media, online marketing, and an ever-increasing demand for edible insects. All while our beautifully decorated unique Bug Wagons travel past tens of millions of motorists on the highways and byways of our routes. This is only a part of the entire vision. The Adventurous Journey! We will travel the highways and byways of the United States, bringing the joy of bugs to all of our appearances. From bullwhip demonstrations to scorpion shot nights; from taste tests to cooking demonstrations; or from the local elementary school to the largest fairs and festivals in the country. The Bug Wagon pop-up extravaganzamart will be overflowing with edible insects and ready to not only show the world all of the benefits that bug protein delivers to the human body, but also all the benefits of bug farming to the environment, and all of the benefits of bugs as feed, medicine, and fertilizer, as well. The Festival Tent! The Bug Wagon’s edible insect extravaganza pop up tents will be beautifully decorated in the festive Bug Wagon style, featuring logos of edible insect companies. We’ll have product sampling, demos, lots of information, and of course we’ll be selling every kind of edible insect and all of the related products we can carry. The Bug Wagon! The Bug Wagon also acts like a mobile billboard, one of the most effective forms of advertising on Earth, providing opportunities for companies in the industry to become more widely known. As time goes by, and more Bug Wagons get on the road, the logos and products of the companies riding along on the Bug Wagon vans and pop-up tents will become more recognizable, and therefore, more mainstream. We'll Keep Adding Bug Wagons... Our adventures will take us all over the country, and we‘ll be adding more Bug Wagons all the time. By year four, we’ll have five Bug Wagons cruising the highways and byways of America, continuously bringing bugs to the people and raising public awareness. The Benefits of Bugs to People and Planet "Bugs. Planet Friendly Protein." Edible insects use much less water and land, and produce much less methane than traditional protein sources like beef, pork, or poultry, yet are equally as healthy, and in some cases, actually healthier. They are definitely better for both people and the planet, as our ever-dwindling resources are having a very hard time keeping up with our ever-increasing population. The United Nations says that by 2050, we are going to have a problem trying to feed the world unless we do something now because of the resource drain. We believe edible insects are a part of the answer. We're not asking people to completely replace their normal protein sources with edible insects, but if everyone set aside just one or two days per month to enjoy a delicious bug-based dish, the impact would be enormous. What We Need Our vision is big, deep, and wide, and we eventually want to cover the Earth. But we have to start somewhere. All visions have a beginning, and ours begins with one van, one pop-up tent (fully stocked), and our Maiden Voyage tour (October/November 2019). Our First Van (of many) We already have a van, a used Plymouth Voyager (the picture is an artist's concept, but the finished version will appear very similar) that needs some mechanical work. We need to get it running safe & sound and road ready; get it painted in the festive Bug Wagon décor, add the sponsor logos, and cover the costs of a short, proof-of-concept tour of roughly a dozen fairs, festivals, schools, civic groups, hot nightspots, select restaurants, and a parade or two in the Southern California area. There will also be administrative costs of licensing, insurance, etc. The Pop-Up Tent We also need to purchase a 10'x10' festival pop-up canopy with a back wall, custom printing, all display fixtures and other little pop-up store necessities, and cover things like payment services, inspection and licensing fees, and other costs. Stocking the tent with goods will be a breeze. We have already worked out deals with over a dozen companies that will be supplying us with edible insects and related products, and more are being added all the time. We'll be an edible insect extravaganzamart! About Cricket Man's Bug Wagon Vision Long ago I was a cook in the Coast Guard. I went through the USCG's (then-called) Subsistence Specialist school in Petaluma, which utilized the Culinary Institute of America's curriculum for institutional cooking. I was a state certified child day care administrator for over 10 years, farmed crickets for local pet stores for over 10 years, and in 2017 I started the Ento Nation podcast and infozine which now has reader/listeners in over 200 countries. I am a bug lover. “Cricket Man is the undisputed voice of the edible insect industry.” -David George Gordon (aka The Bug Chef), author, The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook Over the last two years I have come to know scores of people involved with bugs, from CEO's of edible insect companies, bug cooking experts, and food manufacturers, to entomologists, entomological thought leaders, and bug farmers from all over the world. People have been listening to and clicking on Ento Nation for many reasons, but a large part of what we do revolves around farming, cooking and eating bugs, and when it comes to edible insects, the Ento Nation is where people go to get answers. When I was a child in the 60's my hippie parents (my sister and I were literally among the first "Flower Children") used to set up a booth at certain fairs in Northern California. My dad made and sold jewelry at these fairs. I would dress up as a clown or mime and perform on the entertainment stages, and wander the fair randomly passing out candy to people. I even started doing it for friends and family birthdays, with my little sister joining in to help (see pic below circa 1972). This was before clowns got really creepy... I fell in love with the whole idea of traveling with a festival and bringing joy to festive crowds. I even wanted to join the traveling circus! But as I grew, well-meaning people let me know that what I wanted to do was not a "real" job. So I let go of that dream. Now, decades later, I find that dream has never left me. I got the initial idea for the whole Bug Wagon vision about a year ago, and have been developing it ever since (with help from Aly Moore, much Mahalos, Aly). FYI, I will not be dressing up as a clown. When life handed me a cancer scare a few months ago, there was about two weeks between "We want to biopsy for cancer." and "Benign! No cancer!" During those two weeks I did a lot of thinking and soul searching. Unless you've been through that kind of thing, I can't tell you how freeing it is to come out alive and with another chance. It opened my eyes, woke me up, and changed my life completely. I refuse to be on my deathbed thirty years from now wondering what would have happened had I pursued my Bug Wagon dream with all of my heart and soul. I'm doing that right now, and I will never quit. I believe in this idea. I believe it is a good idea. The more people that hear our message, the more people that become interested in the whole idea of entomophagy (eating bugs on purpose). And that's what we're here to do: introduce people to the benefits of bugs to their bodies and to the planet in a positive way. I am going to chase and fulfill this lifelong dream of bringing joy to people in a festival atmosphere, while at the same time truly helping to make the world a better place, and also helping further several worthy industries involved in the bug business. One final note: I want to close with what I always like to share... You don't have to wait for all of this sustainability stuff we talk about all of the time to kick in to start making the world a better place, you can do so right this very day. All you have to do is treat each and every person that you come in contact with each day with kindness, dignity and respect. Treat them as a VIP, as if they are the most important person in the world at that moment. Open a door for someone, ask to help carry something for a stranger, let the other person go in traffic, let someone go in front of you in line, smile, be nice, try to help. You do that, and you're already making the world a better place, and spreading half the message of the Bug Wagon! Real Food Revolution for Pets Red Dog Blue Kat was born out of the simple truth that there is no such thing as “pet food” – food is food … there is fresh food and there is highly-processed food. For many years, people have invested billions of dollars in processing food to make it more convenient and globally accessible. Today we know better … we know that these highly processed foods are at the root of many chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dental diseases, and even cancer. The Whole Story Back in 2004, inspired by the difference real food made for their own pets, and frustrated by the lack of information about pet diets and health, a group of friends got together and started Red Dog Deli Raw Food Company Inc. They embraced an ambitious mission to help as many pets as possible live longer and healthier lives. Their goal was to create a company that put pets and their health first, above profits. A company that would operate with integrity and transparency. Since it’s inception, Red Dog Deli has been instrumental in setting standards for the emerging real food industry for pets. In addition to creating a quality raw food line under the Red Dog Blue Kat brand, the company and its owner have heavily invested in: Education and research … including building a robust education platform, researching diseases and dietary solutions, hiring a full-time nutritionist to support customers and develop tools and educational materials for pet parents, and ongoing training initiatives. Raw food formulation expertise by working with leading pet nutrition experts like Dr. Karen Becker, Julie Ann Lee, and Steve Brown. We are continually reviewing our formulas and adjusting them with the most up to date information. Food safety and quality manufacturing standards including building a state-of-the-art food manufacturing facility and implementing a rigorous food safety program (HACCP Certification). We have a full-time microbiologist and quality control expert on staff. Ethics and sustainability – we have always believed that all animals should be treated with respect and only use suppliers that share our values and commitment to animal welfare. We are continually reviewing and revising our processing practices and programs to reduce waste and materials used both in our packaging and in our manufacturing process. We often joke that “We put all our money into your pets’ mouths …” We always try to keep our pricing as low as possible, but real food is not cheap. By the time we pay for raw materials, labour, delivery costs, and overhead for the facility, there is not much left over. We invest everything that remains into education and raising the bar in the pet food industry … but often this is not enough. In contrast, kibble companies have large margins (due to the use of low-quality ingredients and/or extensive processing practices) and millions to spend on marketing. In 2016 we faced a very difficult and costly decision. Due to a significant contractor error in the construction of our freezer, our facility would have become unusable in less than a year. We literally had an iceberg forming under our building. We were running out of time and building a new plant required a significant investment. In order to be able to move and continue our good work, our only option at the time was to bring in an outside investor group to help us build the new amazing facility that we are in today. For a while, things seemed to be going well … However, most investors don’t often invest in education and social purpose, unless there is a quick financial return. And our investors are no exception. They are now looking to exit the business because our growth and profitability did not meet their early timeline expectations. If we do not find a different financial solution, these investors could force the sale of the RDBK business to another investor group that does not share our values or … they may even force RDBK to shut down in order to recover their funds. So once again, we find ourselves fighting against the clock … Our Campaign This grassroots campaign is about changing a century of “pet food” misinformation and our battle for independence (from our investor group) to ensure we can continue to help pet parents and set the bar for food quality for our pets unhindered by predatory financial agendas. After an exhausting fight on both fronts, we have come to realize that if we are to win this battle on OUR terms, we can’t do it alone. We need your help today! WHAT IS THE BAN WORKSHOP? 'Ban' means clay in Wolof, the most spoken language in Senegal. Clay is a foundational material in Senegal. Pottery played a major role in shaping the culture of several ethnic groups who have an ancestral history of working with clay, notably through the use of hand building techniques to craft objects tailored for everyday purposes. However, today we are sadly losing the practice of this vital traditional art. The creation of Ban Workshop has been inspired by the practice of pottery in Senegal and more importantly by a small community of professional potters established in Dakar. Amadou, Cheikh and Aboubacar fell into pottery in their teenage years through a twist of fate. Like many people in Senegal, they could not afford any classical form of education but received a training that taught them to master this craft. Pottery was fundamental to their upbringing; it gave them a purpose and became a life-changer. Together with Imann (the founder), the four realised the potential for pottery to be considered as an emancipatory practice, one that could enact social change, the same way it impacted their respective lives. We are raising funds to open the Ban Workshop pottery centre in March 2020 in Dakar, Senegal. Our aim is to preserve the practice of traditional Senegalese pottery while introducing potters to contemporary techniques and to offer free pottery training to young underprivileged people. To sustain ourselves and promote pottery practice in Dakar, we have designed a range of functional objects using traditional hand building techniques to cater for the needs of the Senegalese clientele, and beyond. Our economic model is committed to reinvesting the profits into ethical pay and social training, a central point in the growth and sustainability of the workshop. The Ban Workshop will offer free training to children and young adults who — due to financial constraints — have limited access to classical forms of education. This is why we need your support! WHAT ARE THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL IMPACTS? The Ban Workshop aim is to become self-sustainable, it means that we are creating employment opportunities for potters, and tangible prospects for our future trainees. Ban Workshop is a journey where we see pottery as an emancipatory practice. Indeed, by providing free pottery training for underprivileged people, pottery will contribute to the wellbeing of our trainees and learn them new ways of expression. Ban Workshop wants to alleviate the feeling of marginalisation that is embedded and triggered by social and economic disadvantages. It is a place where we hope to inspire future generations to shed the light on the life of their communities and to be active — as opposed to be simple witnesses — in creating social change. HOW WILL WE SUSTAIN OURSELVES? To start with, our range of glazed pottery will be sold in our Dakar’s workshop. We are proud of our team of potters/teachers who joined the Ban Workshop with their existing and faithful clientele, acquired over the years. Parallel to selling our range of utilitarian products, we will implement classes and workshops for adults who wish to create their own objects, as well as workshops for kids and other birthdays’ workshops. Finally, we will propose our services to schools, organisations, and companies who internally promote team building programs, etc. The majority of our clientele is composed of conscious consumers with an interest for local craft and who claim to be sensitive to social matters. Nonetheless, we do equally consider the crowd of tourists and visitors, as well as commercial businesses (restaurants, hotels, etc.) who could be looking for products “Made in Senegal”. RISK AND CHALLENGES Training Acquiring machines and equipment is one step, but we also need the potters to run them. Our three potters all master ancestral and handbuilding techniques, two of them can also throw on the pottery wheel, but none is familiar to glazing. We are confident in our designs, as well as the potential interest from the community to take classes. However, we need to complete our potters training to be able to deliver long lasting and finished products to our clientele. For this to happen we need to secure enough money to pay for our visiting professional ceramicist and the glazing material. Social impact It takes a long time, dedication and an entire community to prove the people around you that there is value in education as well as to demonstrate the virtues of art and culture. Like our potters’ journey, the results are only visible in the long run but are worth the investment. Before being the colossal Baobab as we know it, the tree was planted as a seed! Many parents encounter this issue but rather than be dissuaded by the STEM toy options out there, we decided that we'd try to change the landscape by inventing our own product. The biggest challenge is the high cost of manufacturing and shipping, but we have consulted many experts to get the best estimates possible for getting the product manufactured, tested and shipped to final users. Our goal of $25,000 is the best estimate for minimum manufacturing order. The Impact Research tells us that those who are underrepresented in STEM fields need to be encouraged early on. According to The Harris Project: Only 1 in 5 students feel “very confident” when it comes to learning STEAM subjects. And hands-on learning tools have the potential to improve educational outcomes that prepare students for the future. According to Claire Shipman, author of The Confidence Code for Girls: Between elementary school and high school, girls experience a 30% drop in confidence. Interactive Stage Projects That Our Students Have Created: Over the past two years, we have inspired over 200 students to create original stories, parades and concerts with the Interactive Stage at our workshops and after school programs. We’ve seen students' excitement as they begin with creating a show from scratch and moving along to programming lights and motors. All the while, they are just doing what they do best, imagining and playing. Furthermore, they are being exposed to engineering and programming without being formally instructed to do so. Growing up I thought that African Americans were destined to be one, or all of the following: athletes, drug dealers, gang members or entertainers. At the age of 14 I underwent heart surgery, which ended my dreams of ever becoming a basketball star. With more time on my hands, because I was no longer practicing, I began to pick up books on Black history. For the first time, I saw myself reflected on the pages of world history. I discovered that Black people were more than just athletes, drug dealers, gang members, and entertainers - but architects, engineers, astronauts and more. Inspired by this information, I became my high school's first-ever African American valedictorian, was accepted to eight universities and received approximately $50,000 in scholarships! The Black365 Knowledge Bowl was created with the intention of being the SPARK that sparks the mind of tomorrow's great leaders! During the Black365 Knowledge Bowl teams of young people challenge one another, and themselves, as they answer 101 questions in world history. Why It's Important Since the death of my father in early last January, I have seen overwhelming evidence that there needs to be a thoroughly reexamined history of his work because his story and that of ARP Synthesizers is relevant to the history and understanding of modern music. Even more importantly, because of the high cost of education and vintage electronic music instruments, we want to offer opportunities for musicians, particularly young and underfunded musicians to have educational and artistic opportunities - something that Alan was passionate about. In the last 40 years, we have taught 100,000 students to read fluently. It’s a drop in the bucket, because I can only train so many teachers, tutors and therapists each year and each of them can only teach so many children and adults. We have been sweeping the ocean with a broom and getting further and further behind in dealing with a very serious problem. 10 years ago, I started a search for a digital solution that would be reliable and scalable because 10 million students across North America need help to read well. We now have a research-proven solution in a reliable and scalable system. This research includes the findings of Project Follow Through, the largest, longest running, most expensive, comparative research study in the history of education. 16 methods were compared head-to-head with a half million students at-risk of school failure for more than a decade at a cost of $1.2 billion dollars. Those are 1970’s dollars. You likely have never heard of Project Follow Through. Few have. 2 methods worked. 14 others were abject failures. We adopted the successful models.
